Lost Lake Trail

The Lost Lake Trail is actually part of the New River complex. However, the access is from a different location. This trail begins with a mellow walk along the edge of Lost Lake and runs through dense forest cover. Soon, however, it breaks out the west edge of the trees and continues through rolling sand and fore dunes. This makes for some pretty tough walking. The trail ends at New River.

Our primary interest in the Lost Lake Trail was in hope of locating some good opportunities for bird photography. We found that theĀ forested area is a bit dense, the lake, while looking like the perfect location, has limited access and the hike out to New River was too long for our purpose. However, we did find the area to be very pleasant and peaceful. It would make a great day hike for just meandering around and appears to get limited use.

One nice find was a good colony of Darlingtonia Californica growing on an island in Lost Lake

Finding Lost Lake Trail:

Drive south on highway 101 for a little over 6 miles to McTimmon’s Lane. Turn right onto McTimmon’s Lane and proceed for about a mile. There is a parking lot at the end of the road with the trail starting in the south west corner of the park. It really is that easy to find.
